Dear NYACES Colleagues
First let me apologize for the passage of so much time since I have last been in touch. As some of you may know, I had an unexpected health challenge appear that started just before Thanksgiving and took until the middle of this month to fully resolve. I am happy to report however, that after surgery I am now just fine and have been able to pick up the reins on NYACES activity again. While I was out on disability, I was still able to participate in a “licensure- challenges working group” organized by NYMHCA executive director, Judith Ritterman and lobbyist Heather Evans. This group met once in person in early December and had a follow –up phone conference in early February. I have also just returned from a lobby visit to Commissioner Munoz in the Office of Professions and from our NARACES breakfast meeting at ACA in Pittsburgh, so there is much news to share about where things stand in Albany and with our own organization.
Our next opportunity for such sharing appears at the upcoming NYMHCA conference at the Albany Marriott April 16th to 18th. Judith Ritterman has offered us a meeting room on Saturday afternoon the 17th from 3:00-5:00 p.m. to be followed at 5:30 with a NYMHCA reception honoring counselor educators. You may choose to attend only our meeting and the reception without registering for the conference but as a panel discussion with David Hamilton, and directors of the various “O” offices (OMH, OASIS etc) is occurring as part of the conference on Friday evening, I strongly encourage you to be in attendance and to register for the whole conference. I am reproducing the invitation and Judi’s follow-up comment below in case you missed it. For conference registration details, please see the NYMHCA website. The panel discussion is a response to the perception of counselor educators from last April’s meeting with David Hamilton that we needed to hear from him again at each conference. Given the challenges our programs face currently, a strong turn out from counselor educators would signal our readiness to take necessary action. Please email me as well as RSVP to NYMHCA if you will attend the NYACES meeting and stay for the reception afterwards, so we can prepare name badges and materials ahead of time. I look forward to speaking with all who can attend, and will plan to schedule additional meetings in May and June for those who cannot make it and for follow –up on our various agenda.
Regards
Karen

The reception will be held on Saturday, April 17th at 5:30 pm, at the Albany, Marriott. Registration at the convention is not required in order to attend the reception. The reception is a wonderful opportunity to network with counselor educators from around the state and be brought up to date on the issues facing our students and graduates.

Best regards,
Judy Ritterman
